The Old Market Hall is a spectacular Elizabethan building in the middle of the market place. Perhaps one of the easiest places to find in the town, yet not many people, even locals, know that there is a fabulous coffee shop and cinema inside it. Opened in 1596 (the Market Hall, not the coffee shop!) as a place of trade and commerce, it was re-opened in 2004 as a well renovated grade I listed building. The coffee shop is lovely inside, with big comfy chairs and sofas straight out of an episode of the TV show 'Friends'. The hot chocolates are generous and the home made cakes even more so, but pushed to choose, their flapjack is my favourite. What I really like about the coffee shop in the Old Market Hall is the way you aren't hurried as soon as you finish your drink. I spent a couple of hours in there a few weeks ago and never felt like I was in the way (though I do apologise if you popped in but were unable to get a seat). It is a great place to sit and review your morning's purchases with a cup of something warm and a plate of something sweet.
