Shrewsbury Bakehouse is a Shrewsbury town-centre artisan baker, set up to produce natural hand-baked breads. Reviving artisan traditions of breadmaking, our labour intensive process produces superior flavoured and textured breads.
Sourdough, or “leavened” bread, is made using naturally occurring local yeasts, the natural malts and nut characteristics of the wheat maturing over a three day period. Even our yeasted breads take two days. That’s why if you want a special order we need plenty of notice! And why when we’ve sold our day’s bake, we can’t just ‘run out back’ and make some more!
Our shop is across from the train station on the opposite side of the street and there’s usually parking in front of the shop - a rare event in Shrewsbury- so it makes it handy to nip in.
Our sourdough bread contains just... flour, salt, water, our natural starter and our natural flavourings such as fruit, seeds and nuts. If you appreciate fine breads, you’ll love Shrewsbury Bakehouse.

Seriously good bread, best I've ever eaten, and the patisseries and cakes are to die for, haven't had a bad one yet (not even mediocre)!
The shop is a nostalgic trip to when food was handmade and lovingly prepared. The owner and her staff are helpful and friendly. Sad to say I'm now addicted.

Seriously good bread. They posted on Twitter recently that they were making Harissa, feta and mint bread so I went along to buy a loaf. Unfortunately, by the time I got there they had already sold out. So I bought a rosemary loaf instead. Really crusty on the outside and deliciously soft in the centre. I was asked whether I wanted anything else, which was a bit cruel when between us on the counter was a huge tray of what looked like a sort of bread pudding made with croissants. I have been promised an early tip off for when the next batch of Harissa bread is on sale.

sourdough to die for.
i've been trying to reach this level of quality at home for years.
just try it for yourself

Great bread and delicious pastries, it's difficult to go back to Chorleywood Bread Process rubbish after tasting the sourdough offerings here. A little pricey but worth it as a treat at least, I just wish the Shrewsbury Bakehouse was open more often!

Wow - bread as it should be! Bread as it was once, before the dreaded Chorley Bread Process was discovered. Not only lot of different delicious types of bread, but also cakes, bread pudding, jams, chutneys - and new things turning up all the time. Best of all, the atmosphere is a touch magical (think 'Chocolat', only bread and cakes...) and when you step inside it's a different world. Wonderful!

Ive only been in once so far, but the owner was lovely and the seeded sourdough loaf i bought was simply gorgeous. I will certainly be going back!
