We went to the Lion for sunday lunch, afer vowing never to go there again (after a bad experience over 12 months ago, when we had to wait for ages to be given a menu and another age to get a drinks order, and another age to get our food, when i complained I was told they had a large party of diners in, and they take priority over us. The food we finally got was cold, not cooked to our liking so it had to be sent back, when it came back it was still not right so we left it. Then they tried to overcharge us, so as i said we vowed never to go there again) So after a bad experience at the horseshoe inn uckington we decided to give the Lion another try. The food was very average, there were 3 thin slices of meat on the plate, my yorkie pud was stone cold, so i sent it back, and it was about 10 mins before the waiter returned with another one, by this time i had almost finished my meal. The service was really bad and the manager had an attitude problem. Plus they tried to overcharge us again, which i think is a policy they employ. Its a shame really because it used to be a great place to eat before the chef left and went to work at Grazia (now romolo).

Unfortunately when we visited not long ago, we had some problems with the service, it was a sunday lunchtime and the food was very very slow in arriving even though it was the sunday lunch menu (which I would have thought was easier to deliver) and the restaurant was not full. When it arrived the plates were cold and therefore the food very quickly was too.
It was nicely cooked and tasty though and the a la carte menu looks very tempting if they can get the service right. I'd happily give the Sam Hayward restaurant at the Lion another go as it might have just been an off day, the surroundings are very nice, the new owners are obviously investing in the business to take this historic hotel forward and I hope it pays off.

I have to agree. THe food and service here is second to none. I don't often eat in "hotels", but with the Lion I am very happy to make an exception to this rule.

Just stayed for 2 nights and the whole set up is Marvellous !! Breakfast sources top quality local produce and the overall Menu is excellent.
Will be returning !!!!

The Lion Hotel changed hands at the end of 2007 and the new management team seem passionate about food. They hired a talented chef and have concentrated on using local ingredients. The meal at a wedding is usually very average, but the meal we had was very good indeed. I would definitely eat there again.
