My wife & I recently attended Traitors Gate on a Saturday evening, As soon as you walk down the stairs you are made to feel very welcome and are looked after really well. Its a very special environment which creates Romance, even if you're not a romantic, you cannot help yourself. The service is fantastic and so was the food, each course a delight. Unlike a lot of other restaurants, we were not rushed at all, we had our table for as long as we wanted, very relaxing. We will soon be back with friends, I would highly recommend Traitors Gate to everyone. You will leave feeling that you have experienced something special, we did.

I recently accompanied my friends to Traitors Gate, as they are regular visitors. I must say that we thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Unlike Eleanor, we felt that the portions were very substantial and worth every penny. I had the pasta which came with a free drink, very tasty. Next time I am back in Shrewsbury I will definitely be revisiting.

Visited Traitors Gate Restaurant on Saturday evening, its getting to be a bit of a habit!

We had a lovely evening, it is so refreshing to go to a restaurant in Shrewsbury and be served by staff that are courteous, polite and cheerful!

I would highly recommend this restaurant as you are guaranteed a meal that is not only tasty but is also served in a lovely atmosphere by lovely people.

Traitors Gate Brasserie is an excellent restaurant. In my opinion it is far superior to any other restaurant in the Shrewsbury Area.

They serve excellent food, the staff are attentive and helpful and the environment is extremely relaxing and intimate.

Also, after having recently visited on a busy Wednesday evening I noticed that they are now serving wonderful pasta dishes that include a side salad, bread and olives all for under £9.

I would highly recommend this restaurant for all occasions.

I am slightly perplexed why the Editor only rated this restaurant 3 stars, but they have written a glowing review?

We ate here on a Tuesday night, which was very quiet, but having booked in advance we got a warm welcome and a lovely table, situated in the crypt-like cellars with plenty on the walls to keep your thoughts occupied between courses.
Food selection was good, with the specials chalk-board of extra dishes making the choice a difficult one, but once a decision had been reached we were not disappointed by the rich and tasty food, at reasonable prices. Lovely atmosphere, great food and friendly staff made it a great meal out!!

Traitors Gate has to be one of, if not the most atmospheric restaurants in Shrewsbury. If you are looking for somewhere to go for a romantic meal, you couldn't go far wrong with Traitors Gate. The restaurant itself is signposted from Castle street and you can access it from there via a narrow passage, or you can walk down St Mary's Water Lane and enter from there. A flight of steps leads down to a delightful trattoria style Italian restaurant run by the very friendly Guiliano, who is always making sure all the staff are organised and all the customers happy.

A couple of steps lead down from the bar to the restaurant floor and each set of tables is separated into alcoves. The ancient cellars are the perfect setting for a restaurant and an Italian one at that. If you want my advice, ignore the printed menu and instead wait for the chalk board to be brought to your table. Three or four starters, mains and desserts are a sure sign that the food isn't over complicated, and you are guaranteed great food. I was disappointed that the spicy sausage wasn't on the board last time I vistied because it is a triumph of a dish, however the handmade ravioli was also excellent.

Whether you are a local or a visitor, this is a great place to soak up the history of Shrewsbury, and while nobody is looking, the rich tomato sauce of your main course with a chunk of fresh bread.
