Traitors Gate has to be one of, if not the most atmospheric restaurants in Shrewsbury. If you are looking for somewhere to go for a romantic meal, you couldn't go far wrong with Traitors Gate. The restaurant itself is signposted from Castle street and you can access it from there via a narrow passage, or you can walk down St Mary's Water Lane and enter from there. A flight of steps leads down to a delightful trattoria style Italian restaurant run by the very friendly Guiliano, who is always making sure all the staff are organised and all the customers happy.

A couple of steps lead down from the bar to the restaurant floor and each set of tables is separated into alcoves. The ancient cellars are the perfect setting for a restaurant and an Italian one at that. If you want my advice, ignore the printed menu and instead wait for the chalk board to be brought to your table. Three or four starters, mains and desserts are a sure sign that the food isn't over complicated, and you are guaranteed great food. I was disappointed that the spicy sausage wasn't on the board last time I vistied because it is a triumph of a dish, however the handmade ravioli was also excellent.

Whether you are a local or a visitor, this is a great place to soak up the history of Shrewsbury, and while nobody is looking, the rich tomato sauce of your main course with a chunk of fresh bread.
