Mytton and Mermaid reviews...

Despite the fear of being thrown out by the owner (see comments below), we recently enjoyed our first meal at the Mytton and Mermaid. The bar which adjoins the restaurant is definitely one of the most atmospheric in Shrewsbury, with a great mix of standing, comfy sofas and wooden bench tables. We were greeted at the door and offered to be shown to our table. Being weekend and incredibly busy with Christmas parties, we were prepared for forgive them if the food took a little while to appear. But there was no lengthy wait between courses and the food was really very good. We both agreed that the starters were the best dishes, though main courses were pretty good too. Presentation and attention to detail was excellent; intricate, but not in a Gary "fingers all over the food" Rhodes kind of way. So many places let their usually good standards slip near Christmas, but not the Mytton and Mermaid it seems. Seasonal menus, very reasonable prices and food cooked by talented chefs make for a place worth revisiting. We may be ignorant. Our opinion may be irrelevant. But we liked the food they serve at the Mytton and Mermaid.

My latest visit to the wonderful Mytton and Mermaid was to discover the new menu for this season. The food was, as usual, superb - I would suggest this is the best restaurant for this area of shropshire. The menu imaginative and the service was attentive and faultless. Value, in these austere times, was better to any comparable restaurant, that makes a revisit an affordable must.

I dont make a habit of looking at these reviews pre-dominatley as I am too busy but also most of these types of reviews are written out of ignorance , by our competitors or out of anger from customers that we chose not to do business with (like this editor) .But after some very good customers commented on the unfairness of your site I thought I should investigate ....
Every one has the right for an opnion and I will as always endevour to investiagte the issues raised . HOWEVER i find it amazing that an editor from a hospitality magazine would be so ignorant as to post the comments he posted ... We would certainly not double the price of a menu purely because it was a wedding .. How ever because of a wedding being such a special day its demands on us as a business are huge they need space and rooms for photos , they need extra staff to ensure all the attention to detail is there to ensure how high standards are met . The chef needs to prepare special menus to cater for large numbers NOT to rip people off ....
HOWEVER .... Thankfully the clients we have comming to us for weddings dont want a table in the middle of the restaurant with their guests eating as if it were any other day .
why didint this editor just book a table in the restaurant like any one else ? If I may suggest the editor do a little research into this industry before hepost comments so inaccurate and inappropriate .
Thankfully we have the busiest wedding season ahead and I KNOW that is due to our reputation and attention to detail ..

Could not fault this hotel/restaurant. It is rare i go out for dinner these days and am actually surprised by the level of service and food. All of the staff were very friendly from from the moment we checked in to our room. It was unfortunate that the restaurant was fully booked but they instead showed us through to the very atmospheric bar/dining area where they did a very similar menu and it really was superb. I will definitely be coming back and telling all of my friends about this place.

We were seated and served starters and drinks within 15 minutes. Towards the end of our meal the service got slower (Sunday afternoon). Food choice was good, overall tasty, portions a little on the small side.

Perfect place for an after-work drink, which is what I went for, a nice setting and view for a chilled glass of wine after a day at work. We sat in the sun on the rustic-look tables outside, and it was such a nice atmosphere that we also decided to have food, they brought bread straight over to our table and the food was great, we had the veal burger and the tomato and goats cheese veggie option, both of which were presented nicely and tasted great. Woudl definitely go again, at any time of the year as I know from past experience that sitting inside is just as nice, with the occasional live music act which just complements the atmosphere!!

Hotel and restaurant promoting local food. Not cheap but a beautiful setting. Opposite the entrance to Attingham Park and next to a bend in the River Severn.
