Small Specialist Food Producers
Chocolatiers, honey makers, pie and cake makers, smokeries; the list is endless. These types of producers have always existed, but a unique set of circumstances have caused these types of niche food makers to increase rapidly. The current economic squeeze has meant many families have had to seek a second income. Where ten or twenty years ago they would have struggled to find a market for their wares, the internet now provides this. For some products, such as food, we still prefer to see and touch before we buy, but the gap between online and offline is narrowing, and this allows more and more specialist food producers to compete for our food budgets. For us as consumers, the more the merrier.
Some food businesses fit comfortably into a given category, such as fish and chip shop, or farmers market. Others are more difficult to define, so rather than create myriad categories with one or two businesses in each, we have grouped them together into a category we are calling Specialist Foods and Small Producers of Shrewsbury and Shropshire.
