Pub Food in Shropshire
The pub, or public house has a long history here in the UK. Although usually thought of as a place to drink and buy alcohol, the average pub now makes more than fifty percent of takings from its food sales! Historically, Shropshire pubs fell into three main categories: Ale Houses, which were all about the beer. Taverns, which were split between beer and hearty food. And finally Inns, which may have offered food, beer and a place to stay. While today's public houses may or may not offer beds for the night, you are hard pressed to find one that does not sell food in some form or other.
While some Shropshire pubs are happy to stick to packets of crisps and maybe the odd sandwich at lunch times, the vast majority have seen how many more people can be attracted to your establishment if you offer not just food, but good food. Employing a good chef who can produce memorable food has helped many of the Shropshire pubs on this page to earn a valuable reputation as places worth seeking out. Add to this the fact that since the smoking ban, the prospect of a meal in the local hostelry has become much more appealing for a lot of people and has certainly played a part in the huge increase in pub food sales.
A large chunk of the pub food market is dominated by chains such as Wetherspoons, who reported earlier this year that almost three quarters of their sales were food rather than beer. Is their food any good? Well there is one thing that they are happy to admit to and that's that the majority of their food is not prepared fresh on the premises. You are more likely to hear the ping of microwaves in a chain pub than the sizzle of pans over gas hobs.
The line between the pub and the restaurant is not always clear and indeed we have added some venues to our restaurants page that could equally fit here on our pub food page. If you run a pub in Shropshire that is serving up good food or if you visit one that does, feel free to let us know about it.
Although you would stuggle to find a pub these days that does not sell food, with a pub on every street, it isn't really practical to list them all. We certainly aren't food snobs and are happy to list a microwave happy Weatherspoons alongside the gastro and fine dining pubs, but we generally take recommendations for pubs and bars that serve good quality food alongside their ales and share with you here the best Shropshire pubs on offer. If they buy in cheap and tasteless pasties and frozen oven chips, or if their menu consists of a few floppy sandwiches that wouldn't look out of place in a motorway service station, then you won't find them on eatShrewsbury. Many of the pubs we list are offering restaurant quality food and employing award winning chefs. These are destination eats!
